Your method did not work for me with Minion Pro, but it does work with Times New Roman. Minion Pro has an acute accent, which is what you get with option-shift-e, but it looks to me like Minion does not have a combining accent, which is what you'd need. My whole job revolves around squeezing 40+ languages into InDesign, so I'm likely to reply to any post that is at all related to non-English stuff. Can you tell us what keystroke(s) you're using, what operating system you're using, and what font you are using? InDesign CS5 is occasionally flaky about "combining accents" but if your font doesn't have the combining glyphs I think it simply won't work. Is this something that broke in CS5 and just needs to be fixed? InDesign is not allowing me to have the accent over the letter. I even looked it up online to get the correct keystrokes for the correct direction and accent. the backslash on your English-hardware keyboard has been replaced with the cedilla. THis might not work for you because for all such keyboards you wind up needing to memorize that e.g. I'm not sitting at my Mac so I can't recall the precise steps but it's in the same menu area as the Character viewer. In your shoes, I might uinstall a French keyboard. I thought you just bumped an old thread with a post of a solution that doesn't involve typing accents.

If you’re just looking for a basic video editing tool for a quick home movie, it’ll be more than you need, and you might find the tools rather overwhelming. As we’ve mentioned multiple times, the user interface is pretty close, more so than other editors we’ve tested, and it brings a similar experience but without the overwhelming number of features. Hitfilm Express is an effective ‘Lite’ version of Adobe Premiere Pro that doesn’t cost you a penny. (Image credit: FXHome) Hitfilm Express 2021: should I buy it? So the fact that FXhome makes learning on Hitfilm so easy, is commendable. It has a YouTube channel where it frequently posts tutorials, and there’s also many masterclasses it hosts online for basic functions.Īs we’ve mentioned, Hitfilm Express is a great ‘Lite’ alternative to Premiere Pro, and it makes sense that people would use it to train themselves up before paying for Adobe’s suite. Hitfilm Express 2021: a great learners’ toolĪs a pro-tier free editing software, Hitfilm Express offers a potentially-intimidating range of features, and booting up the program could be intimidating for new users depending on which app they’ve come from.īecause of that, it’s great that FXhome offers lots of options for learning. Still, if there’s an add-on you see yourself using frequently, the prices are pretty reasonable - the pack that includes vertical video, easy text editing and picture-in-picture costs just £8.84, and the lighting pack is £17.69. Letting free users access a few LUTs would be a great incentive for people to buy a more advanced pack, but as it stands this is an area where other free video editors have an edge. A great example are Look-Up Tables (LUTs), which many film-makers use to give an edit a preliminary color grade, before working on a proper color grade further along the pipeline. We can understand Hitfilm’s reasoning for putting price tags on its more advanced features, but there are a few we’d argue are important editing tools. You can see them all via the Hitfilm Express online store, but the app itself will frequently remind you of what you’re missing. There are loads of add-ons for Hitfilm Express, ranging from effects like gunfire and particles, to color, editing and VFX extras. Hey, FXhome has to make money off its powerful software somehow. If you want to really make the most of Hitfilm Express, you have to pay - and we don’t mean by upgrading to Hitfilm Pro. (Image credit: FXHome) Hitfilm Express 2021: a vast paid library Lots of these effects say ‘’ at the end though, because Hitfilm Express isn’t 100% free… There are footage effects like distortions, filters and stylization tools, and some ones which might prove vital to keen film-makers, like a day-for-night colour grade (which didn’t look horrible, and could be useful for those unfamiliar with grading). When you’re happy with how your footage on Hitfilm Express looks, it’s easy to apply effects - you don’t have to jump between different windows on the program, and you don’t have to download and learn loads of other programs (looking at you, Adobe), to make the most of it. Hitfilm Express 2021: easy-to-apply effects Other effects are easy to apply from this tab too, making it a one-stop-shop for any changes you might make to the footage - no jumping between different tabs like in many other editing programs. We can picture new editors starting with the former method, but gradually learning to appreciate the latter. In this way, it makes for a good stop-gap between the basic video editors that you might use for a home movie, and more sophisticated professional-tier software. When you’re looking to edit your footage itself, Hitfilm Express gives you both the easy option (simply resizing your clips with your mouse, by dragging at the corners or scrolling with your mouse wheel) or the complicated way (a transform tab with the position, scale and other metrics all viewable). So what are smart plugs, anyway? Looking a lot like travel adapters, these small devices turn any regular light or appliance into a smart appliance that can be controlled by an app or voice assistant. They can also easily integrate into home monitoring security systems, with an ability to support a number of Zigbee and Z-Wave smart outlets. Smart plugs are an easy-to-use introduction to the world of home automation because they can function independently. They are the versatile building block of any connected home and the easiest entry point for consumers to enter the smart home world. Typically they come with a companion app where you will create an account and set preferences, schedules and names for the devices you are plugging into the outlet. That makes them easy to install and quick to connect. The majority of smart plugs work with a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi connection and don’t need a hub or gateway. You can use it with a lamp, a TV, a cable box, a coffee machine or whatever you like. Simply plug these compact devices into any wall socket, then plug your chosen appliance into it. Controlled by an app, a smart plug lets you turn on and off any appliance that plugs into a standard wall socket.Īs part of the solution you can actively control it, or automate it so that it reacts to schedules and triggers from smart device. They affirm that creative thinking about politics is possible: there is an alternative. The ideas advanced are less interesting as policy than as examples to play with, and whet the political imagination. His thinking is buoyantly Whiggish, opening with the assertion that “everything was worse” in the past – and so, by implication, everything might be better in the future. And he turns those weapons against unnecessary cruelty, overwork, authoritarianism and bigotry. Haunting Utopia for Realists are the ghosts of epochal leftwing defeats – unnoticed by its author and never exorcised.Īll of Bregman’s ideological weapons are drawn from the side of optimism and potential: what could be done with the tremendous powers of 21st-century capitalism – a “fantastic engine for prosperity” – if only there was the political will to achieve it. The entire socialist project, not to mention dozens of national liberation struggles, suffered a grotesque perversion symbolised by Stalinist dictatorships. It is not just that welfare becomes surveillance, liberty becomes starvation, and flexibility becomes precarity. This is where anti-utopianism, or “realism”, derives its ideological power. This is significant not just because it makes clear there are rightwing versions of the policy he favours, but in indicating how, in general, Bregman tends to ignore the way utopian aspirations are so often appropriated and turned into their opposites. But he glosses too swiftly over the fact that one of the intellectual authors of Nixon’s minimum income plan was the neoliberal ideologue Milton Friedman. When welfare states turn punitively moralistic, we want independence. In an age of precarity, we want security. The policy that Nixon implemented, working tax credits, was closer to the actual Speenhamland system – as are many workfare-style policies.īregman’s arguments for a universal basic income are seductive. He is mistaken to claim that under the system “everybody in need had a right to relief” it was a wage subsidy for the “industrious” not the unemployed. Yet as he rightly points out, borrowing from the sociologists Fred Block and Margaret Somers, Speenhamland successfully reduced poverty – and not at the expense of wages or productivity. He blames negative myths about that system for Richard Nixon’s failure, in a different age and continent, to implement a guaranteed minimum income. And the lessons are not always the right ones.įor instance, Bregman takes a revisionist look at the Speenhamland poor relief system, introduced in Britain in 1795, as part of his argument for a universal basic income. When we are told, for example, that “history is not a science that serves up handy bite-sized lessons for daily life”, it feels like unconscious self-mockery: much of the book is precisely about taking handy bite-sized lessons from history. There are points in the book where journalistic flair doesn’t quite smooth over the contradictions. It is a welcome sign of life in the reformist imagination. And if some of what Bregman proposes is uncontroversial enough to be policy – as deficit-spending and universal basic income already are in Canada – the book tries to radicalise these ideas and push them beyond the current liberal mainstream. Myths about the poor, migrants and GDP are ritually slaughtered with gusto. Venerable leftwing causes such as affordable housing, and a reduction of the working week, are refurbished with new data, expert interviews and historical anecdotes. If the book contains little news, it makes the old feel new. For example, Organic Calfskin Kit allows you to use unique performance articulations, such as mallets or brushes. The beauty of this drum plugin is that it offers things none of the other drum plugins do. Plus, even if you're not a huge fan of the Calfskin Kit, once you download this virtual drum machine, you can download different drum kits from the manufacturer's website. Of course, you can always upgrade and get more drum sounds if you like, which could make it an excellent choice for pop, EDM, 80s-style rock, or more! There are a few very realistic samples on here, though I would say that it's better for something like a hip-hop track rather than a realistic rock song. In fact, there are 20 drum kits to pick from, as well as 12 pads, volume and pan controls, reverb controls, and global ADSR. Is an incredible ROMpler with tons of vintage sampled kits. However, even with that said, it's surprising how much this free plugin is capable of, especially when you consider how many great presets it gives you to start. So yes, unfortunately, if you want to synthesize a snare drum, you'll have to upgrade from the free version to the full version. With the free version of AudioSpillage MiniSpillage, you get a bass drum, a wood drum, and hi-hats. If Tap to Translate sounds familiar, it’s probably because Google already launched an earlier version of this feature last year. These packages are now available in 52 languages.įor Android users, the most important new feature is Tap to Translate. With this new version, the Translate team is bringing offline support to iOS. Since then, there haven't been any notable issues. BlueStacks patched the vulnerabilities immediately, and it was probably fixed before any hacker had a chance to exploit it. However in 2019, security researcher Nick Cano alerted BlueStacks to a major security flaw in the program that could potentially let hackers steal users' personal data and install malware on their computers. Or, as Mirgain likes to refer to the process – the Phoenix Phenomenon, suggesting that a new life arises from the remains of the old way of being. There is actually a term for the process – post-traumatic growth – and it refers to the benefit and personal growth that comes from experiencing a crisis. When patients are able to stay resilient, they are better able to cope with the medical condition, stay positive and even discover new aspects of themselves they never realized,” she said. “Receiving a serious medical diagnosis, for example, can cause psychological and physical stress – and it can even be traumatic. But, problems arise when we become stuck in those emotions. Mirgain is quick to note that feelings of anger, depression, anxiety, guilt or sadness during tough times are very normal, and we should never try to ignore those feelings. “We can shut down emotionally and let ourselves become hardened by it, or we can grow from the experience.” “We have a choice in how we respond to difficult times,” said Shilagh Mirgain, PhD, Health Psychologist. And, while it may not seem like it at first, something positive can come from the experience. The rain, of course, is the challenging times that we all face – medical diagnosis, divorce, job loss, even just navigating the teen years as a parent. As Ella Fitzgerald once sang, “into each life some rain must fall.”Īnd while we can’t control just how much it rains, we can make a decision – let ourselves get wet, or break out the umbrella. Using and rearranging this equation, we can always work out a value for one of the values of weight or distance if we know the other three values.Madison, Wis. So, the moment of Person A, their weight multiplied by their distance from the pivot equals the moment of Person B, their weight multiplied by their distance from the pivot. If two people (Person A and Person B) sit on a seesaw, the moment of each person equals their weight multiplied by their distance from the pivot. Since the system is balanced, we can calculate an object's weight measured as a downward force in Newtons, or distance from the pivot. In a stable or balanced system, the anticlockwise moments are equal to the clockwise moments.Ī seesaw is a balanced system of moments where two people are balanced on a solid object on top of a fulcrum or pivot. These moments can combine to make a bigger turning effect or can work against each other to reduce the turning effect. Sometimes objects can experience more than one moment. Using the same equation, we would produce a moment of 5 Newton metres on the nut. Let's increase the length of the spanner to 20 centimetres, keeping the force used at the end of the spanner at 25 Newtons. So that's 0.1 metres multiplied by 25 Newtons, which is 2.5 Newton metres.īut what if that's not enough to undo the nut? We work this out by multiplying the distance from the pivot to the point on the spanner where the force is applied in metres by the force on the spanner. If we apply a 25 Newton force to the end of the 10-centimetre-long spanner to turn a nut, what is the moment? Moment equals Force multiplied by the Perpendicular Distance to the Pivot.Ī lever is a rigid body that rotates about a pivot or fulcrum. We can calculate the moment of a force using the equation: Perpendicular or right-angle distance from the pivot to the line of action of the force. Moments are measured in Newton metres and the size of a moment depends on two factors: the size of the force applied and the Examples include a door opening around a fixed hinge, seesaws, scissors or a spanner turning around a nut. A moment is the turning effect of a force around a fixed point, the pivot. |
